Like a Puppeteer

Description

Hmm I've never done anything like this. And it makes me feel really good that I decided to.

I got this idea while I was playing Maplestory a few weeks ago. -smacked- But new ideas for it just kept piling on and on, and this is the final product. I thought long and hard about how I wanted to compose this drawing, so everything I chose to do here has a purpose. I would explain it, but...I think it's pretty self-explantory, isn't it?

In reality, overfishing kills more marine life than oil spills really do, but I thought it was a pretty good idea to make the puppet strings be oil.

Humans really have control of the oceans; we're like puppeteers. The oceans may be vast and deep, but the things we do to the waters and the marine life...we have more impact (and negative impact at that) on the oceans than we actually think. The marine animals shown here are endangered species. (Perhaps not the little fishes in the in the water, but I felt they were a nice touch, to add to the beauty of the coral reefs.) Bluefin Tuna, dolphins, whales, Hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, sea otters, and coral...

So think about them the next time you decide to litter, or drink sharkfin soup, or leave your electrical appliances on all day.

Litter pollutes the water, and plastic bags (curse those things) can suffocate marine life. Did you know there's a huge mound of plastic trash swirling around a vortex in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? Do you know how big it is? Try almost twice the size of Texas. There is a bloody mound of plastic trash floating in the middle of the Pacific Ocean that is twice the size of Texas.

Shark-fishing is a generally horrid and inhumane practice, and although it is illegal, there are still poachers who overfish sharks and some only cut the fin off. The rest of the shark (still alive) is tossed back into the oceans, writhing in agony until its death. There are industries and companies that forbid workers to throw the shark back into the ocean, but if you're an illegal poacher, who cares?

I don't care if you believe in global warming or not, but these greenhouse gases do exist, and carbon dioxide and methane are proven to be two of them. It certainly doesn't help at all if the Earth is slowly getting warmer. Coral reefs suffer from temperature fluctuations. They're VERY sensitive, and with the increasing heat in the atmosphere, they begin dying off. What produces carbon dioxide? Cars do. Making energy and electricity does. Cut down on your car travel time, or carpool. If you can get somewhere within half an hour of walking, just walk! If you can bike, do that! Don't leave your appliances on if you're not using them. Turn them off. Save energy and save money!

Just know this is happening, and do your part by not littering, trying not to consume products made from these endangered animals, and be smart about your energy usage.

That is all. I won't even give you a self-demeaning rant about what's wrong with this picture this time, because for once, I'm just happy to focus on the message a little bit more than on the art. I am pretty satisifed this time around, except for the water. But hey, it was a first attempt at using watercolor pencils, so it looks alright.

Time: 13 hours
Tools: Prismacolor color pencils (Premier and Verithn), Derwent watercolor pencils, mechanical pencil

This is an amazing piece of art in every single way! An amazing overall vision and composition. Great technical skills in coloring and blending colors, as well as the contrast between the black and the vibrant colors of the sea creatures. I love the clever concept, and the message of the piece is sad yet inspiring. It's a very original idea (at least I haven't seen anything like this before). The sea creatures look so delicate and fragile, yet full of life. It's simply perfect. The only small thing that could be made even better would be the background - since there is so much detail in the drawing of the sea creature, maybe have some more detail in the dark background. Perhaps black clouds/smoke? But it looks great as it is, very excellent job on this <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt="=)" title="=) (Smile)"/>
